It depends on the population and definition. HEPI found 95% of surveyed UK undergraduates used AI in at least one way, while Gallup found 57% of surveyed U.S. degree students used AI daily or weekly. These figures should not be treated as directly comparable.
Common uses include explaining difficult concepts, summarizing material, researching information, drafting or improving content, solving technical problems and preparing for assessments.
Trust and AI literacy are uneven. Common Sense Media found only 35% of surveyed U.S. children ages 9–17 correctly recognized that AI cannot reliably distinguish true information from false information.
The tool alone does not determine whether use is acceptable. Course rules, the type of assistance and whether a student submits generated work as their own all matter. Gallup found 52% of surveyed U.S. college students said at least some courses lacked clear policies.
