Each subject’s day and session is in the schedule below, and the biggest format changes for 2027 land on calculus, precalculus, physics, statistics, the three history exams and the world languages. We make Aripsy, which writes AP practice questions from your class notes, and the course table further down comes from the AP course profiles it uses.
2027 AP exam schedule
Each exam day has two sessions. Session 1 is typically the morning and Session 2 the afternoon. In the lower 48 states, Hawaii and Washington, D.C., they start at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. local time. The late-testing week is May 17 to 21, 2027, and your AP coordinator arranges any late exam.
Schools must order exams for full-year and fall courses by November 13, 2026, and for courses that start later by March 12, 2027, so ask your AP coordinator how and when to sign up. Hybrid exams are marked below, and to find one subject quickly, the course table further down lists 21 common exams from A to Z with their date, mode and sections.

What’s new for 2027
- New for 2027, the world language exams and AP Statistics move fully into Bluebook, AP Music Theory becomes hybrid, and AP Business with Personal Finance and AP Cybersecurity hold their first exams.
- Calculus AB and BC, Precalculus and all four physics exams have new question counts or timings. The US, European and World History exams drop the choice of short-answer question and of long-essay prompt.
- Released exams from before 2027 still help with content, but time yourself to the 2027 sections.
Which AP exams are digital, hybrid or portfolio-only in 2027

You read the free-response questions in Bluebook (in Music Theory, in the booklet) and handwrite your answers in a paper booklet. | Biology, Chemistry, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Precalculus, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Music Theory, Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism |
| Portfolio only | No exam in Bluebook. Your work goes through the AP Digital Portfolio. | 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, Drawing, Research |
College Board mentions paper only for “accommodated paper AP Exams”, for students with approved testing accommodations. Your AP coordinator confirms how you test.

How to practice for the 2027 format
For the exam format itself, start with College Board’s own practice. Sign in to the Bluebook app with your College Board account and open the test previews, so the app is familiar before May.
- For hybrid exams, look at the sample free-response booklet on College Board’s hybrid exams page and practice writing answers by hand in that layout.
- For Statistics, practice typing statistical notation with College Board’s digital response guidelines, because your free-response answers are now typed.
- For a language and culture exam, practice with a wired headset and microphone, and learn one way to type accented characters (Bluebook lets you long-press a key or use a special-character button). Chinese and Japanese need an input method editor installed on the testing device.
- Past free-response questions still teach the content, but older papers use the pre-2027 timing. Time Calculus, Precalculus and Physics sections to the new lengths, and answer all three history short-answer questions.
To decide which units deserve that practice, our guide to building an AP study plan around your weakest units shows how to rank gaps from progress checks and released questions. If you want the weeks laid out, the free revision timetable generator builds a plan that counts down to the dates above.
FAQ
When are AP exams in 2027?
The 2027 AP Exams run May 3 to 7 and May 10 to 14, 2027, with late testing May 17 to 21. The schedule above gives each subject’s day and session.
Are all AP exams digital in 2027?
Yes. College Board says all AP Exams are digital from 2027. 26 are fully digital in Bluebook, 12 are hybrid with handwritten free-response answers, and four subjects are portfolio-only.
Which AP exams are hybrid in 2027?
Biology, Chemistry, Calculus AB and BC, Precalculus, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Music Theory, Physics 1, Physics 2 and both Physics C exams (Mechanics, and Electricity and Magnetism). Music Theory is new to the list, and Statistics has left it.
Can I still choose questions on the AP history exams?
Not between prompts. From 2027, AP US, European and World History students answer all three short-answer questions and a single long-essay prompt. College Board moved the choice inside each question, such as which developments you write about.
When is the deadline to sign up for 2027 AP exams?
Schools must order exams for full-year and fall courses by November 13, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET), and for courses that start later by March 12, 2027. You sign up through your school, so ask your AP coordinator for its own date.
Are old AP exams still good practice for 2027?
Yes for content and skills. Papers from before 2027 use the older multiple-choice counts in Calculus, Precalculus and Physics and the older question choices in history, so time yourself to the 2027 sections.
