How to check your personal statement

  1. 01

Write or paste each answer into its box, in the same order as the questions in UCAS Hub.

  2. 02

Keep going until every answer shows Minimum met and the total stays within 4,000 characters.

  3. 03

If you're over, trim the longest answer first. Then copy each answer back into UCAS Hub and check its counter.

UCAS personal statement format for 2027 entry

  1. 01Why do you want to study this course or subject?
  2. 02How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
  3. 03What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

How characters are counted

The counter follows UCAS's published rules and says where it has to make an assumption.

  • Spaces count, because UCAS's 4,000-character limit includes them.
  • Each line break counts as one character. UCAS doesn't say how its counter treats line breaks, so counting them makes you less likely to go over.
  • Every letter, number, punctuation mark and accented letter counts as one character.
  • Only your answers count, not the wording of the questions.
  • Some word processors leave line breaks out of their character count, so their total can be lower than this one.
  • Counting happens in your browser. Your answers are saved only in this browser, so they're still here when you come back; Clear all removes them.

How to split 4,000 characters

UCAS sets no target for each answer: how much you write for each can vary with your course and experience. Three answers at the minimum use 1,050 characters, which leaves 2,950 to spread as you choose.

  • 01Draft freely first, then use the counter to trim. Cutting filler is easier than squeezing in a new point.
  • 02Paste each answer into its own box in UCAS Hub, in the same order as the questions.
  • 03Check the count in UCAS Hub's own counter before you submit: that is the one that applies.
  • 044,000 characters is roughly 690 words, so plan for about that much writing in total.
  • 05Write it yourself. UCAS advises against copying or sharing personal statements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UCAS personal statement character limit?

4,000 characters including spaces, shared across the three answers. UCAS says you can use the limit across the answers in any way you choose.

What is the minimum for each question?

Each answer needs at least 350 characters. Beyond that, you decide how long each one is, as long as the three together stay within 4,000.

Do spaces and line breaks count?

Spaces count: UCAS's limit includes them. UCAS doesn't say how line breaks are counted, so this counter counts each one as a character. Check the final total in UCAS Hub before you submit.

Do the questions count towards the 4,000 characters?

No. UCAS's toolkit for advisers says the questions aren't included in the character count, so the full 4,000 is for your answers.

How many words is 4,000 characters?

About 690 words, using an average of 5.8 characters per English word including the space after it. 350 characters is about 60 words.

Does the three-question format apply to 2027 entry?

Yes. UCAS's three-question personal statement applies from 2026 entry onwards, so it covers courses starting in 2027.

When is the UCAS deadline for 2027 entry?

For most undergraduate courses, 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses had an earlier deadline of 15 October 2026.

Is my personal statement saved or sent anywhere?

It isn't sent anywhere. Counting happens in your browser, and your answers are saved only in this browser so they're still here when you come back. Use Clear all on a shared computer.
