Quizlet to Anki converter

Paste the text from Quizlet's Export window, check every card in the preview, then download a file that Anki's File > Import reads with the settings already filled in. Definitions with line breaks stay in one piece, and nothing you paste is uploaded.

How to export a set from Quizlet

Quizlet lets you export the sets you created, from its website. These steps follow Quizlet's help centre.

  1. 01

Log in on the Quizlet website. Exporting isn't available in the iOS or Android app.

  2. 02

Select Your library, then Flashcard sets, and open the set you made.

  3. 03

Open the … (more) menu and select Export.

  4. 04

Choose what goes between term and definition and between rows. Tab and New line work for most sets.

  5. 05

Select Copy text, then paste it into the converter above.

Quizlet only exports sets you created: a set you copied from another user can't be exported, and images aren't included.

How to import the file into Anki

Import with Anki on your computer. Your phone gets the cards when you sync.

  1. 01

Download the Anki file from the converter. It's a plain .txt file.

  2. 02

Open Anki on your computer, click the File menu, then Import, and choose the file.

  3. 03

Check the import window. The file already sets the separator to Tab and turns on HTML; pick a note type such as Basic and the deck you want.

  4. 04

Click Import. To study on your phone, sync with AnkiWeb afterwards.

The file's header lines are read by Anki 2.1.54 and later. Sources: Anki Manual: Importing · Anki Manual: Text files

What the converter does with your text

It follows the format of Quizlet's text export and Anki's text import, and shows you every card before you download.

  • Splits each row at the first separator only, so a comma or colon later in a definition stays in the definition.
  • Adds lines with no separator to the definition above them, so definitions with line breaks stay on one card.
  • Keeps quotes and symbols such as < and & exactly as you typed them, and escapes them so Anki shows them correctly.
  • Skips rows with no term or no definition, and exact duplicates, and lists them so you can check.
  • Writes a tab-separated .txt file with Anki's header lines: tab separator, HTML on, Front and Back columns.
  • Runs in your browser. The text is kept only in this browser so it survives a reload; Clear removes it.

Which separators to choose

Pick the same options here as in Quizlet's Export window. If a separator also appears inside your cards, export again with one that doesn't.

  • Tab between term and definition: choose Tab or Auto. It works for almost every set, because cards rarely contain tabs.
  • Comma between term and definition: choose Comma or Auto. Only the first comma in a row splits it, so this works unless a term contains a comma.
  • Custom between term and definition, such as ##: choose Custom and type the same text.
  • New line between rows: choose New line. Lines that belong to a multi-line definition are joined back to their card.
  • Semicolon or Custom between rows: choose the same here. A custom row separator such as #### keeps line breaks inside definitions exactly.

Tips

  • 01Want cards in both directions? Choose the Basic (and reversed card) note type when you import, and Anki makes one card each way.
  • 02Importing the same file twice won't double your deck: Anki spots notes with the same first field and, by default, updates them.
  • 03Quizlet's export is text only, so add any images or audio in Anki after importing.
  • 04If a card's term and definition look merged or cut short in the preview, a separator probably appears inside that card. Export again with a different one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export a Quizlet set I didn't make?

No. Quizlet's help centre says you can export the sets you created, and a set you copied from another user can't be exported.

Can I export from the Quizlet app?

Not at the moment. Quizlet says exporting is only available on its website, so open Quizlet in a browser to export.

Are images and audio included?

No. Quizlet's export is text only and doesn't include images. Add any pictures or audio in Anki after you import.

Which version of Anki do I need?

Anki for a computer. The file's header lines, which set the tab separator and HTML for you, are read by Anki 2.1.54 and later. Import on the computer, then sync with AnkiWeb to study on your phone.

Why are some cards split in the wrong place?

A separator probably also appears inside a card, such as a comma in a term. Export again from Quizlet with Tab, or a custom separator such as ## that isn't in your cards, and choose the same option here.

Is my set uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and the file is created on your device. The text is kept only in this browser so it's still there after a reload; Clear removes it. It only reaches Aripsy if you choose to open the cards in Aripsy.

How many cards can I convert at once?

Up to 5,000 cards, or 2 MB of text, at a time. Aripsy opens up to 100 cards per set; the Anki file has no such limit.

Is this an official Quizlet or Anki tool?

No. Aripsy isn't affiliated with Quizlet or Anki. The converter reformats text you paste, following Quizlet's and Anki's own help pages.
